Many people have complemented me on my talent for always knowing when crazy events are taking place around San Francisco, how I always know where the latest hotpots to eat, shop, or see are located, and I'm often asked for suggestions. So I'm going to share my secret to being "in the know." Aside from having way too much time on my hands, I have a few great newsletters/ websites I check out and read often when I need inspiration. Best part of them is that they have online archives you can search if you don't want to clog up your inbox. Here are my faves:http://www.yelp.com/ Yeah, I know this is an obvious site, but I really like their weekly newsletter. The site can be a little "corporate", advertisement heavy, annoying at times, but the newsletter is great inspiration to get you moving. Each week's newsletter has a theme, picks for the week, etc.http://www.thrillist.com/ Great Newsletter and with easily search able online archives, true to their advertising, they're recommendations don't suck. Each weekday, they drop you a must-have recommendation, from the best of what's new, to deeply under-the-radar goodness. "So we don't write reviews, just recommendations, and because we painstakingly wade through the crap to unearth greatness, you get exclusively the best of your city's food, drinks, gear, services, entertainment, travel options, and events"http://www.weekendsherpa.com/: This site is where i go when i want to get my outdoor activity fix, it's reminiscent of the old TV show Bay Area Back roads, but BETTER, its archived online and offers a free weekly e-mail newsletter bursting with ideas about where to go, what to do, and how to get there. And although it's become wildly popular, Weekend Sherpa offers so many options that you don't feel like everyone's in on the secret…"http://www.urbandaddy.com/: This is another subscribeable "email Magazine" devoted to keeping you in the know. It's geared toward men, but offers a fresh editorial concept. "We start from the premise that there's a lot of noise out there when it comes to your city—poor recommendations, shills, plants, promoters, liars, enemies, and exes. Our goal is to be your friend. The kind of friend who knows everyone—the maitre d's at all the right restaurants, the bouncers at all the right clubs, the addresses of all the great parties."http://www.dailycandy.com/san_francisco/: This site was just bought by Comcast for major bucks, so I'm still waiting to see if it stays true to it's editorial concept of no pay for play, but so far I've loved the Daily SF and Kids newsletter. (no I don't have kids, but its so cute) The archives are searchable on line. DailyCandy is a free daily e-mail from the front lines of fashion, food, and fun. Sign up to get the scoop on hot new restaurants, designers, secret nooks, and charming diversions in your city and beyond. I like the San Francisco, and if you have kids, the SF Kids newsletters.http://www.7x7.com/: Surprisingly this San Francisco Magazine does offer more than just pictures of San Francisco Socialites at their various Gala's and Store Openings. I like this site for finding new restaurant recommendations. They also have an "itlist" newsletter you can subscribe to for a weekly fix of their recommendations of events, and "to-dos" around town.
